Allow nesting of folders

We think that allowing folders to be nested within folders will introduce a lot of complexity to folders in general.

Some design aspects that trouble us or would make things less intuitive to use are:

  • How would smaller folders overlay their parent folder pop-up?

  • How do you navigate back to the parent? Do you need to close the entire tree and re-enter it?

  • Where should notification previews be shown? Should they all propagate to their parents?

  • We need to stop users from creating a looped folder structure, which would lead to nesting a folder sometimes not being allowed, and it would not be clear right away why.

As an alternative for the most common use case, which is using folders to categorize apps, we are thinking about a way to categorize your apps and then search or access these categories.

    I don't think that nesting folders is necessary. What I would like to have is just one line that says PopUp folders and have it be collapsible so that I can make my list of folders disappear. I just want to see the one clean line amongst my few favorites . Give me the option of organizing my folders either by usage or alphabetically. What may help regarding the cumbersome grouping is if you were able to write a command so you could pull the existing grouped apps from the home screens. Even if you couldn't automatically folder them at least we would have what was most important to us available in a big group and then we could parse them out from there.

    How would they overlay:

    • If you swipe to open a new pop up within a popup, then it should close the current popup and replace it with the new one.

    For navigation there are a few options that could work:

    • A little back button on the top left of the pop up. Simple option, or

    • Add a browser style tab at the top, or bottom. You could make it a swipe bar that switches backwards and forwards through your popup tabs.

    How to handle notifications:

    • Only display notifications for nested pop ups within the main pop up if the unnested apps within the first pop up are clear.

    • I'm not entirely sure what the concern is for notifications. But you could also just ignore notifications for sub popups or just prioritize the main popup apps first.

    How to prevent looping pop ups:

    • I don't think you do. A warning maybe. But I see no issue with looping pop ups. It could actually become a versatile way to navigate if you allow users to do it!

    I think the giving users the ability to create a folder or category, and use that as a popup for an app would be optimal. This would allow users to catagorize their apps and use them as popups from their favorites- which is how most people seem to use popups.

    Has it been considered to make folder to folder jumps? I often create folders/categories as part of workflows and it would be great if from the previous even if it just a reminder of related folders that those could be mentioned so that you can more easily jump around. Keep up the amazing work!
