Gmail widget disappears when double tapping home button

Intended behavior:

When i hit the home button at the bottom center of my screen, it shows the apps list. When i hit it again, it goes back to the favorites page.

Problem: If i hit it twice in quick succession, the Gmail widget disappears. It's uninteractible but takes up the same space. I have to do it again (quick double tap home button) to get it to return. I often tap my home button as a sort of fidget so it's a little annoying.
