Keyboard closes using gmail app on Pixel 10

I am having issues using this keyboard when I am typing an email on My pixel device. On occasion, when I tap on an inline word, the keyboard closes as if I dismiss it with the down arrow. I have to tap on the message for it to return. It doesn't happen often but maybe 5 or 6 times during a medium lengthened email. I am on Android 17 stable running the October update. The Gmail app is up to date. This is not an issue with any other app that I use.
