Theme color does not update from wallpaper on Samsung Galaxy M06 5G

The automatic theme color extraction from the wallpaper does not appear to work on a Samsung Galaxy M06 5G.

The user reports that Niagara’s theme colors do not change automatically when the wallpaper is changed, even though “Wallpaper and System” is selected as the theme color source.

The user also owns a Samsung Galaxy M14 5G, where the same feature works correctly.

Additionally, Niagara displays a “Can’t Show Wallpaper” message in the theme preview on the affected Galaxy M06 5G.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. Set or change the device wallpaper.

  2. Open Niagara Settings → Themes → Edit Current Theme.

  3. Open Theme colour.

  4. Select “Wallpaper and System”.

  5. Return to Niagara.

  6. Observe that the theme colors do not adapt to the wallpaper.

Expected behavior

When “Wallpaper and System” is selected, Niagara should use colors extracted from the current wallpaper.

Actual behavior

According to the user, Niagara’s theme colors remain unchanged after changing the wallpaper.

The attached screenshots confirm that “Wallpaper and System” is selected and also show the additional “Can’t Show Wallpaper” message. The screenshots do not directly show the wallpaper color change itself.

Additional information

The same user reports that automatic wallpaper-based theme colors work correctly on their Samsung Galaxy M14 5G.

    Thanks for the detailed report, and especially for the follow-up. That last detail is the key one: Niagara's theme editor can only work with a wallpaper that was set through Niagara itself. When the wallpaper comes from Samsung Gallery or from the system settings, Niagara has no access to the image file, which is also what the "Can't Show Wallpaper" message in the preview is telling you.

    So bringing the wallpaper in through Niagara once should sort it out: open the image in your gallery, tap share, and pick Niagara Launcher. Selecting it from the theme editor when it asks for a wallpaper works as well. The steps are described here: Wallpaper Missing in Theme Editor.

    The clock color staying unchanged while the rest of the theme updates looks like a separate thing, so I passed that part on to the team.

    Update from the user:
    Theme colors do update when the wallpaper is changed directly through Niagara Launcher. However, they do not update when the wallpaper is changed externally through the Samsung Gallery.

    Additionally, the clock color does not update even when the wallpaper is changed through Niagara and the rest of the theme colors update correctly.
